Hay Scented Fern: A Native Fern Plant

Saturday, January 29

The Hay Scented Fern is widespread because it resembles a carpet.

The fern is dense and can be found growing in large colonies. The Hay Scented Fern can often be confused with the New York Fern because the leaves are similar as well as the colors.

The Hay Scented Fern does well in open woods and wooded areas. The fern can reach heights of up to 12-18 inches. The Hay Scented Fern is a deciduous fern that grows randomly anywhere that a spore can land and grow well. The Hay Scented fern has light green leaves with a lacy look to it. This fern is very different because, on the underside, you can see the dark dots, which are the actual spores.

The Hay Scented Fern is a great fern to have around if you want to have green foliage because this is one fern that will stay around. After all, it is deer resistant, and deer do not eat this type of fern. Hay Scented Ferns get their name because when they are bruised, they smell like hay.

Hay Scented Ferns make an excellent ground cover plant because they grow well together and make a tremendous thick area of deciduous ferns because they do well in either partial sun or full shade and make an excellent ground cover.
