If you want to grow your fruit, you could plant fruit trees like apple, peach, or pear trees. Alternatively, you could plant berry plants that take up much less space and do not have to be confined to an allocated garden area. These berry plants can serve a double purpose of providing food and creating a unique edible landscaping pattern for your outdoor space.

Some berry plants that would add beauty to your yard and gardens include: Highbush and lowbush blueberries

  • Brambles (Blackberries, raspberries, and gooseberries)
  • Currants (Tiny red, pink, white or blackberries)
  • Elderberry shrubs
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Strawberries

Highbush blueberries are eyecatching with tiny, cup-shaped, white flowers in the springtime and stunning, crimson color in the fall. With a height of no more than 6 feet, they can be grown in containers. Lowbush blueberries attain a height of 18 inches or less, making them an excellent ground cover. They tolerate dry soil, making them an excellent choice where grass does not grow well. Brambleberry plants create excellent hedging with their large size and rambling nature, adding a bit of privacy to a yard or disguising an unsightly fence.   Tiny, colorful currant berries with their delicate, lobed leaves add a decorative touch to your outdoor space.  The large elderberry shrub, the shady, draping grapevines, the heart-shaped leaves of the kiwi plant. The exceptional ground cover of strawberry plants can make your yard and garden uniquely beautiful.
