Andropogon Big Bluestem - 25 Plants $79.99 Description

Andropogon Big Bluestem

Andropogon Big Bluestem provides benefits to many wildlife. It provides native vegetation restoration in agricultural or grazing areas. A warm-season grass, constantly grows in summer when the temperatures of the soil are warm.

This plant is a tall plant native to central and eastern North America's Great Plains and grassland regions. You can find it from the midwestern short-grass grasslands to the coastal plain, where it provides a natural source of fuel for the recurrent fire.

Andropogon Big Bluestem is also an excellent native grazing feed for animals and is quite tasty

As far as this plant goes, this one is big and robust, with mature plants reaching 6 to 8 feet tall. The leaves range in color from pale yellow-green to burgundy, and the rhizomes are thin and spiky. Unlike other bluestems, the seed head is gritty rather than fluffy. Individual seed heads frequently produce three spikelets that resemble the toes of a turkey. The peak prairie species known as "big blue" is a climax prairie species.

It can, however, grow in a wide range of well-drained soils and thrives in low-fertility environments. It gives good stability for sandy areas after it has been planted. Hence, this plant is used for erosion control plantings.

High in protein, this plant is also an excellent native grazing feed for animals and is quite tasty. Big blue, like the other plants, provides excellent animal habitat. This clump-forming grass is used by white-tailed deer quail and many other ground-nesting birds for nesting and foraging cover. This perennial plant provides the fuel required for ecosystem maintenance in the deciduous forests habitat. The leaves and stems turn a deep red-bronze color during the winter, providing landscape interest well into the winter.

It may thrive in a wide range of conditions, from wet clay to dry sand. Many insects live in this plant. This well-known grassland staple is vital to native prairie ecosystems, providing a home for a wide range of insects, small animals, and birds. It's a huge plant that can grow over six feet tall in most cases.

In agricultural or grazing regions, it can restore native vegetation. If possible, conventional tillage is the best way to plant it. It's also possible to use a native seed no-till drill. Before planting native warm-season grasses, it's critical to eliminate any non-native pasture grasses. Herbicides are commonly used to do this. Fertilizer is generally not suggested because it encourages weed growth. This plant is available in various cultivars from commercial seed companies. When recovering native plants in an area, try to use a local ecotype.
