Bird Watchers Appreciate The Phytolacca Plant

The Phytolacca Plant in North America includes several decorative perennials within the Phytolacca genus. The most common, P. Americana, produces attractive flowers and abundant berries. This hardy plant thrives in Eastern, Central, and Coastal areas of North America.

Berries For Birds

The Phytolacca Plant produces tiny white, green, or purplish-red flowers and copious quantities of dark berries hanging on bright waxy red stems. The dark smooth purplish to blackberries somewhat resembles currents in appearance. They measure up to 0.25 inches in diameter. The berries help feed several species of birds. However, they prove quite poisonous when consumed by people, house pets, and livestock (as do other raw parts of this plant). Birdwatchers sometimes grow the Phytolacca Plant as a food source for wild birds. When handling them, gardeners should wear gloves.

Impressive Heights

The Phytolacca Plant in North America typically reaches a maximum height of around 9 feet, although some robust examples have attained up to 20 feet or more! This hollow-stemmed perennial sends a strong taproot into the ground, enabling it to endure harsh environmental conditions which might overcome more delicate plants. Sometimes grown as a garden ornamental, the Phytolacca Plant flowers throughout the year in the South. From early Spring through early Autumn in colder growing zones.
