Have you ever wished on a shooting star? Watching for falling stars is a magical way to pass an evening out of doors. They are not actually stars, though, but bits of rock and dust burning up in earth's atmosphere.
You can actually plan for an evening of shooting stars, depending on weather conditions. The Perseids are an annual meteor shower that occur each August. Make a point to go outside during them this year and make a wish. You never know who might be listening. In the meantime, check out a plant whose oddly shaped petals remind people of falling stars so much, it's become known as the shooting star. Find it among our perennials.
