Topiary is the art of pruning and cutting perennial plants, shrubs and hedges to maintain specific shapes and designs. It is a form of horticulture practice wherein certain varieties of plants are sculpted to give them an artful form. Topiary has been really popular since the early Roman days and is practiced till date to attract more and more visitors to the gardens. There are many famous topiary gardens all around the world that are full of green artwork and exquisite sculptures made out of shrubs and hedges.
Topiary has evolved so much over the years that now people are interested in trying it out in their home gardens. Topiary can be done in the home garden by planting specific shrubs/ plants with thick foliage. Some common plants that are used in topiary are boxwood tree, evergreen plant, holly, privet and myrtle.
Topiary plants last for a long time so it is important to prepare the soil and ground thoroughly before planting. Once the ground has been prepared, the shrubs or hedge can be planted. Putting wire cages or frames around the plant will ensure that the plant takes support from it and grows accordingly. On maturity, the thick foliage and leaves can be sculpted and designed to give it a desired look. Mature plants should be pruned and cut regularly otherwise they will lose their shape and look shabby.
If you are a beginner and do not have much experience in sculpting then it is advisable to cut out the outer shape lesser than what you want it to be. The actual shaping and pruning can be worked upon later when the basic shape is in place. This gives lesser room for error and you can keep sculpting till you get the desired effect.
You can find many hedge plants and shrubs that are apt for topiary in nurseries. Choose the best plants and put them as specimens in your garden. The art of sculpting can be mastered with time, experience and patience. A Well trimmed topiary garden is bound to get praises from everyone and it will give you utmost satisfaction to see the results of your hard work.
