Lawn is a crucial part of any garden and it is known for its beautiful green turfgrass. Kids and pets love to play on the turfgrass. Even adults cannot resist sprawling on the green grass. Any garden would be incomplete without a suitable turfgrass that can potentially transform the entire garden.

Lawn grass or turfgrass comes in many varieties out of which some are cool season grasses and some are warm season grasses. As the name suggests, cool season grass does well in cooler temperature and warm season grass thrives well in warm climate. It is important to choose the grass wisely so that they can survive. You can seek help from your local nursery as they can guide you and provide recommendations depending upon the location or climate.

Turfgrass can be grown from seeds that are easily available in the market. It is advisable to get the soil tested in laboratory before growing grass. If the soil lacks any nutrients then you can make necessary soil amendments this will increase the chances of survival and growth of the grass. Warm season grasses can be established during early spring and cool season grasses should preferably be grown in late summer or fall season for better performance.

To maintain healthy and green lawn you will have to fertilize it occasionally. Ample feeding during growth period will ensure that the grass becomes healthy and strong. However, do not over- fertilize as it can burn the grass. Once the grass has matured you would have to mow it regularly to maintain a neat blanket of grass. Do not mow it too deep as it can damage and loosen the roots of the plants.

It is advisable not to grow turfgrass in shady areas as they need full sun to thrive. However, there are some shade tolerant varieties also available in the market so if you are planning to grow them in shade then go in for the one that is apt for such areas. Some common turf grasses that are used in home gardens are Red Fescue, Tall Fescue, St. Augustine Grass and Zoysia Grass.
