Geraniums are beautiful flowering plants that have many diverse varieties. They are easy to grow and can add color to your garden for a long time. Geraniums remain in bloom until early winter season and they can be grown from seeds and also from cuttings of established plants.

When to Plant

—Geraniums should ideally be planted in early spring as soon as the danger of frost is gone and the ground is ready to be worked upon. Planting them during this time will ensure that they get established before the blooming season.

What to Plant

—Geraniums can be grown from seedlings, cuttings or seeds. There are many geranium varieties available in the market and you can try out different ones. Some specific varieties can easily be grown from seeds like Pinto, Orbit, Elite and Bandit. The ones that can be propagated from cuttings are Yours Truly, Mars, Tango and Kim. There are many distinct geranium varieties that are quite popular like the scented geraniums, Ivy –Leafed and Martha Washington.

Basic Requirements

—They should be planted in a well drained area that receives ample sunlight. If the plants are exposed to sun, they will produce more flowers. Geraniums require atleast six hours of sunlight daily to perform well. They can grow in almost any kind of soil that is rich, aerated and well- drained. The soil quality can be improved by adding manure or compost. The geranium plants should be watered thoroughly so that the soil does not dry out. Do not over- water but the keep the soil moist for best results.

Fertilization

—Geraniums are heavy feeders and they require ample fertilization. Regular fertilization is essential for the growth and development of the plants. Water soluble fertilizers can be used at least once a month to feed the plants.

Propagation

—Geraniums can be established year after year by planting the cuttings. The plants can even be trimmed and re- planted in containers that can be placed in sunny locations during harsh winter season. Growing them from best quality seeds is also possible.

Problems

Geraniums are not very susceptible to insects, pests and diseases. Leaf blight, leaf spots and botrytis can affect the plants during wet season. Fungicides can be applied to get rid of specific plant diseases. It is advisable to take care of the plants

and grow them in healthy and well- drained area so that they do not get infected by diseases readily.
