Redbud trees

By Tammy Sons

Looking for a small tree to plant around your house or garden? Well the Eastern Redbud is a perfect tree for landscaping. They can grow anywhere from Canada to Florida. The flowers start appearing from March to May. The flowers are a vivacious pink color and are almost a half inch long. They appear in clusters right before the leaves emerge. They can also grow on the trunk itself. The Eastern Redbud is the state tree of Oklahoma. The flowers on the tree are a magnet for bees and butterflies. They can grow up to twenty to thirty feet tall and have a spread of twenty-five to thirty-five feet. The bark on the tree is smooth when it is younger; when it ages it becomes scaly. These trees grow quickly, growing about one to two feet a year. They can grow in any type of soil and withstand drought and wet soil. They grow best in light shade during the summer and in full sun light in winter. They have a short life span. They can live longer when planted in a well-drained spot. The bark is very thin and can be damaged easily, so they should be planted in places that are less likely to have strong storms. The tree is likely to have more than one trunk. The leaves appear to be a light green in the spring, dark green in the summer and yellow in the fall. The leaves are heart-shaped. The best time to plant them is in the fall.
