Purple Trillium - Trillium erectum
The Purple Trillium is a perennial plant, and has been long known as wake-robin as well as stinking Benjamin. Blooming in the spring the deep rich purplish red flowers resembles the vibrant red breast of the Robin thus bearing the name. The exquisite beauty of the plant is accompanied by a stench of rot that brings the flies that pollinate this unique spectacle of nature. The three petals of this trillium can be a half inch wide and 1 ¼ inches in length portraying the deep purplish red hue making them a valued flower among horticulturists. The blossom of the trillium stands upright and has the appearance of facing outward, in its unique beauty this remains one of the most unpleasant smelling flowers grown. As well as being a cultured garden addition this plant grows wild throughout much of North America.
