Plant Maple Trees For Autumn Color

Maple Trees belong to Acer genus and they have many different varieties that have an amazing fall color. These trees are extensively used for landscaping purposes because of their distinct foliage. These trees provide shade and privacy around the house and a majestic maple tree can be an asset to your property.

Common Varieties- Japanese Maple and Red Maple trees are common ornamental trees used in most of the households. Other cultivars include Autumn Red Blaze, Mountain Maple, Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, October Glory Red and Red Sunset. All these are excellent for landscaping purposes.

When To Plant- The ideal time for planting maple trees is early to mid spring season when the ground is ready to be worked upon. Spring planting gives them enough time to establish themselves before the harsh winters and frost. However, some varieties can also be successfully planted in late summer or fall season at least 6- 8 weeks before the first frost.

Location- Maple trees do well in partial shade. They should be planted in well- drained and good quality soil which can neutral to acidic in nature. Maple trees can tolerate wet or moist soil. Some maple trees are known to have aggressive root system so avoid planting them too close to the sidewalks, pathways, walls and basements.

How To Plant- The planting hole for the maple tree should ideally be at least four times the size of plant’s rootball in width and length. Make sure to remove the maple tree carefully for transplanting without causing any harm to the roots. Once the tree has been placed in the ground, cover the roots with dirt and soil to eliminate any air pockets. Fill the hole will soil and water it properly soon after planting.

Care and Maintenance- Your Maple Tree will need plenty of water during the initial growth stage as it grows rapidly to develop a strong root system. Regular watering is required for the tree to grow properly. Watch out for nasty weeds as they can pose as a threat. Mulching around the tree can help in getting rid of unwanted weeds. Saturate the tree and enough moisture to the roots through watering before winter season.

These are the basic things that you should keep in mind if you are planning to plant a Maple Tree in your garden. A well maintained Maple Tree can act as a perfect focal point in the garden.
