Perennial hibiscus is a beautiful flowering plant that blooms during late spring season and dies back in winter. It comes back again every spring to bloom and has a life span of three or more years. This plant can be grown to add a tropical feel to the landscape.

Perennial Hibiscus comes in many varieties and the flower can be bright pink, red or white in color. The flowers are very prominent and showy. Perennial hibiscus plants are different than the tropical variety as the tropical hibiscus tends to get damaged during winter season. However, the perennial hibiscus dries up during winter season and re-appears during spring every year. Hibiscus plant can grow up to 3 to 8 feet in height.

It should be planted in full sun to partial shade. The plant is adaptable and can tolerate almost any kind of soil provided that it is not heavy clay. Perennial hibiscus cannot tolerate drought and it should be well- watered. The soil should be well- drained but it should be kept moist. These plants are generally late bloomers and the flowering happens in late summer till fall season.

Plant the perennial hibiscus in areas that are protected from strong winds as the branches and flowers can get easily damaged during heavy winds. These plants are amongst the last ones to break dormancy in the spring season so do not get worried if they do not show signs of growth during early spring with the other plants.

The plant can be propagated through cuttings or even seeds. You can also buy container grown plants and transplant them in your garden. Re- planting container grown plants is much easier than propagating through seeds or cuttings. It is advisable to feed the plants at least twice during the spring season to boost flowering. Composted manure or bone meal can be used to get the best results and bright colored flowers. Rich soil and organic matter will ensure that plant is well fed and it will produce more flowers.

Some of the common Hibiscus varieties that can be grown in home gardens are Fantasia, Blue River II, Kopper King, Fireball, Jazzberry Jam, Old Yella, Cranberry Crush, Turn of the Centurty and Party Favor.
