Here are some tips to cure the Winter Blues
Although the winter seems to hang on and on, now is the time to get out the paper and pencil and plan your landscape project. Spring is just around the corner. This is time of the year that all those plant/seed catalogs fill our mailboxes as well as our imagination. For those who enjoy romping through cyberspace in search of that perfect ground cover, tree, or flowering plant for your garden start the journey at www.tnnursery.net
Planning a new landscape or renovating an existing unsatisfactory landscape here are some helpful tips.
Make a map: Your site plan should be very simple and does not have to be artistic. Trust the little squares in graph paper.
When laying out your site plan make sure to consider:
a. Overhead power lines. Should never plant a tree under a power line.
b. Underground pipes and wires - Do not plant trees over these items; particularly, sewer lines. Tree roots are constantly seeking moisture and nutrients and will eventually penetrate that sewer line. A costly bundle of trouble.
c. Mark existing trees, shrubs, sidewalks, stairways, arbors, patio, etc. This will enable you to decide later which to keep, change or remove.
Site evaluation: What kind of soil is throughout my landscape, same or different? What are the Sun and shade patterns; however, remember the sun changes position throughout the year and is sunny in the winter maybe shady in the summer. This part of your site evaluation is really an ongoing event throughout the year noting Sun and shade areas of your landscape. On a rainy day or when the snow melts observe whether there are puddles or mini lakes forming. This indicates a drainage problem.
Access use patterns: Who will be accessing your landscape and by what method. The meter reader, mail carrier, family dog, kids, visitors, etc. The questions to ask your self are the existing access areas and entryways obvious, attractive and functional.
Now we come to the fun part, the preliminary design: Now that you have scouted out your site and know its assets and drawbacks, you can begin to create a plan. A good design should follow an old proven principle, keep it simply and inexpensive.
There are six steps to a simple landscaping project:
Step one is your lawn.
Step two is soil and mulch in beds. This step is important because the brown color of the mulch offers a good contrast amongst the green. It accents the landscape.
Step Three would to incorporate a low growing ground hugging plant like Blue Rug Juniper.
Step Four would be a little taller plant such as evergreen azaleas, Blue Boy, or Blue Girl Holly. Actually, any intermediate type shrub would be suitable. Check www.tnnursery.net for variety of shrubs.
Step five should use something a little taller than step 4, such as Rhododendrons behind the evergreen azaleas.
Step six are your upright plants that could accent corner of house or sidewalk. Perhaps a Japanese Red Maple, Japanese Weeping Red Maple or a flowering dogwood would be in order.
