Black Oak – Quercus Nigera

Buy Black Oak at TN Nursery.   This tree is also known as water oak, is a native deciduous hardwood tree. At maturity the tree reaches a height of about 30ft with a trunk diameter of up to 3ft. The range of the black oak is the eastern coastal plains of the US from southern New Jersey to Florida and along the Mississippi River valley as far west as Oklahoma.  This tree has been widely used in hardwood re forestry projects. It is fast growing and has a short reproduction cycle compared to other hardwoods. The average life expectancy is shorter than that of other oaks, about 60 to 80 years.

Immature trees have smooth brown trunks which turn rough and grey-black as the tree matures. The leaves are most often spatulate and shiny and fall in the early winter after other trees are bare.  The canopy of this tree is 50 to 70 ft making it an excellent shade tree. The tree requires full sunlight and will not tolerate even partial shade. It is not competitive and doesn't thrive well with other species. This tree produces abundant acorns which serve as food for native wildlife. It is best to plant it away from concrete or asphalt because the acorns will stain these surfaces.  This tree is an excellent ornamental in large yards. It has been grown successfully as far west as California and as far north as Oregon. Although primarily known as a wetland species, black oak isn't as picky about it's environment as some species and will grow in clay, compacted soils and a variety of other conditions. It native to the southern portion of the North American continent and we recommend it for this area.  Tn Nursery raises black oak seedlings for use in landscaping and gardening.
