What are the three sisters of gardening? Some Native Americans grew three special plants together that nurtured each other as they grew. They were referred to symbolically as the three sisters. They were corn, beans and squash.

The corn acted as a trellis for the beans. The beans replenished the soil with nitrogen. The squash had big leaves which kept the ground cool, helping the other plants grow in the heat of summer. Not only did they help each other grow, since they were all different heights, they could be grown in a much smaller area than might have normally occurred separately. If you're looking for a new wildflower with an interesting name, check out Squirrel Corn in our online plant nursery.
