How To Identify Unhealthy Plants in Your Home Garden

A garden is full of lovely and beautiful plants that thrive if their basic requirements are met. There are many varieties of plants, trees and shrubs in a garden and it is important to take care of them so that they continue to grow vigorously. However, sometimes the plants develop strange symptoms like stunted growth, spots and rot which point towards different diseases. It is crucial to know about these signs so that you can take appropriate measures to treat the plants.

Here are few tips to identify problems related to plants. These signs can mean that the plants are diseased, unhealthy or infected by pests and insects. If you notice them in your garden then you will have to take measures to treat the plants-

Holes on Plant Leaves: Holes on plant leaves mean that insects and pests like slugs, beetles or bugs are feeding on your plants. Some of the bugs like flea beetles can be real nasty as cause a lot of damage to the leaves. To keep your garden free from insects and pests, it is important to keep it clean and healthy. Remove debris and dead or infected leaves, braches, twigs, etc. Remove weeds and mulch around the plants to minimize the risk of insects attacking the plants. There is no way of keeping the insects and pests away from the garden but you can definitely take precautionary measures to minimize the damage.

Spots on Fruits or Veggies: Many fungal and bacterial diseases cause black or brown colored spots on the vegetables and fruits. Different plant species get infected by different infections and diseases so consult a professional to deal with the problem. There are suitable fungicides and other chemicals available in the market to treat specific plant diseases.

Brownish spots on stems or leaves: In case if the climate has remained wet and humid for certain time period with no proper sunlight then the plants can develop brown spots on leaves and stems. They are most vulnerable to infections during wet and rainy months. Some of the common diseases that cause such symptoms include Bacterial leaf spot, Rust and Alternaria Blight. It is advisable to remove the infected leaves immediately so that infection does not spread to the other parts and surrounding plants.

Unusually yellow colored leaves: There could be plants which are not able to absorb or take in the right nutrients from the soil and they start turning yellow. These plants are unhealthy and weak as they require nutrients like iron, magnesium etc. If the soil is too wet, alkaline or lacks essential nutrients then the plants start turning yellow due to deficiency. Get the soil tested and add recommended nutrients to improve soil quality of your home garden.

These are few tips to identify unhealthy plants in your garden. If you identify the symptoms early then it is easier to take corrective measures.
