This tree can grow to an impressive 30 feet tall and starts its young life with thorns on its branches and trunk. As it matures the thorns are replaced with odd, corky bumps until the thorns eventually disappear beneath these completely. This tree has club shaped branches with sturdy twigs and the bark is an interesting shade of grey-brown. 

This tree like shrub blooms in early spring and produces small, white flowers at the end of its branches, these become follicle fruit (deep purple or black in color) and that dries and splits to reveal a shiny black seed. The leaves are a deep glossy green and form a pinnate with seven to nine leaflets.
