Hazel Alder Seedlings will grow into a thicket-forming shrub when mature. It is also called the smooth alder or its scientific name, Alnus Serrulata. These shrubs are native to the eastern portion of North America and can be classified as a large shrub or a small tree. These do best when planted in climate zones 5 through 9. It will reach a height of about 20 feet and can be up to 20 feet in width once it is mature. It is a moderately growing plant, growing at a rate of about 25 inches per year. It will do well in a variety of soil conditions and also likes full sunshine to partial shade. These shrubs love water and will do well when planted in wetter areas. They are also excellent for helping in areas where soil erosion is an issue.
