The Hay Scented Fern is a very common fern because it resembles a carpet. The fern is a dense fern and can be found growing in large colonies. The Hay Scented Fern can often time be confused with the New York Fern because the leaves are similar as well as the colors.

The Hay Scented Fern does well in open woods and wooded areas. The fern can reach heights of up to 12-18 inches. The Hay Scented Fern is a deciduous fern that grows randomly anywhere that a spore can land and grow well. The Hay Scented fern has light green leaves with a lacy look to it. This fern is very different because on the underside you can actually see the dark dots which are the actually spores.

The Hay Scented Fern is a great fern to have around if you want to have green foliage because this is one fern that will stay around because it is deer resistant and deer do not eat this type of fern. Hay Scented Ferns get their name, because when they are bruised they indeed smell like hay.

Hay Scented Ferns make a great groundcover plant because they grow well together and make a great thick area of deciduous ferns because they do well in either partial sun or full shade and make a great groundcover.
