Plants By Type
Wednesday, March 23
Have you ever driven by a home and seen a monkey swinging from a tree, only the monkey was made from plants? Or, seen a hedge pruned to look like a triangle? Or a car? Topiaries like these are forms of living sculpture. Some are whimsical and meant to be enjoyed year round, while others like the cloud style pruning in Japan create topiaries which are most beautiful with a dusting of snow.
Many types of plants can become topiaries, but the main requirement is that it be a perennial with small, dense leaves to make it easier to shape to your desired appearance. Bay laurel, European Box and various Privets are most easily trained into topiaries. Both California and Chinese Privet are found in our online plant nursery.
