How to Plant Trees

Tree planting is not a difficult task but it needs to be done right to ensure that the trees you plant have the best possible chance to grow and thrive. Here are some of the pivotal steps involved:

  • It is important to plant trees in the most favorable season which is late fall and early spring.
  • Depending on the region, climatic conditions and the amount of space you have, choose the right tree to plant.
  • Use an appropriate shovel to dig a hole that is about 2 or 3 times the size of the root ball. Create a little dais in the center and rest the root ball on it; the surrounding area needs to be dug deep. Once you fill the hole in, ensure that none of the roots are left exposed and the crown area, where the stem graduates into roots, is not covered.
  • Fill the hole with a mixture of 75 percent mud and 25 percent compost or organic manure.
  • Water your tree. Once the dirt has settled, add the remaining soil and water once again to remove any air pockets.
  • Now that the tree is in the soil, it is time to mulch. Put about 2 to 3 inches of leaf mulch or shredded hardwood mulch around the planting hole but at a safe distance away from the tree trunk. Wait for an hour and then water the tree once again.
  • Depending on the size of the tree, consider staking it at least for the first year of its life. Stake the plant lightly without damaging the bark. This will ensure that the tree does not sway and detach itself due to strong winds.
  • Water your tree as often as needed, depending on the kind of tree you have planted. Most trees require at least a weekly watering to form deep roots.

Enjoy your newly planted tree for years to come and watch it increase the value of your home!
