Milkweed is lovely plant that comes in many different species. The Asclepias tuberosa variation is known for its small vibrant orange flowers that blossom together in circular clusters that bloom from late spring and throughout summer. The plant itself is a perennial plant, meaning that the livelihood of the plant continues for many growing seasons. It stands at 2-4 feet tall, and 2-4 feet wide, making it a non-overbearing addition to any garden. The plant itself is also a pleasure to look at for any passerby. Not only is this beautiful plant attractive to the human eye, but it is also highly tantalizing for butterflies.

Known by many different names that emphasize its blossoms such as Indian Posy, Orange weed, and Chieger Flower, it is also named for its other special quality, and that is its attractiveness to the butterfly insect. Butterfly weed and Butterfly Love are other names that emphasize its special quality. Due to its bright color and appeal to insects, the butterfly weed easily attracts many types of butterfly to its sweet smelling blossoms. One of the most common types of butterfly that the plant attracts is the monarch butterfly.

One of the most famous of types of butterfly, it is extremely recognizable with its large black and orange wings with their striking patterns. It is also one of the larger butterfly in the United States. In terms of feeding habits in relation to the plant, the butterfly and its larvae use the plant as a main source of food and nutrients. These butterfly are attracted to the nectar of the flower and the nutrients of the leaves. How they feed from the plant is that the adult butterfly will leave its larva on the leaves of the plant. The larva will then continuously feed upon the plant leaves, thus gaining the nutrients they need to survive. The butterfly use of the plant is nothing but beneficial, despite its feeding diet, as the insect does not harm the plant in any way.
