English Ivy - Helix Hedra
English Ivy, also known as Helix Hedra, is an evergreen climber that does well in sun or shade. This plant is ideal for zones three through nine and does not over grow to become invasive or unruly. It grows three to four inches per year and stays lush and green year round. Most people love these vines because of their ability to climb and stop any soil erosion. They also work well when planted as a ground cover under shrubs or in areas of shade where little else will grow. Some homeowner's plant them on steep hills where they cannot maintain, and this helps to keep the soil in place as well as minimize yard work. They will smother out weeds and become a garden all their own. This ivy is found growing on older homesteads and was a choice favorite because they do not require lots of care like other ground covers do. This is a plant of choice when needing a nice and unique ground cover vine for year round beauty. This vine can grow to be anywhere from ten to thirty feet long and is a fast growing variety. It can be used as a vine or a ground cover, depending on what the landscape might need. As a ground cover, it can help keep weeds at bay and also looks very elegant in how it spreads over the whole area. As a vine, it will climb and spread over any surface it is near, so be mindful when choosing the planting area.
