Red-winged blackbirds are known to perch on cattails along with fish nesting at its base. In the flowering months during summer the cattails will burst creating white fluffy materials to spring forth. Birds will use the materials to pad their nests. Cattails love water and will root quickly in most any marsh or really any standing water.
