Catnip is thought to be a good mosquito repellant. Want to try an experiment? Surround your outdoor seating area with it, and see if you can tell a difference on stinging summer evenings. As a relative of mint, it grows very easily, so is a perfect plant to do this with. 
 
The oil made from the plant is said to be 10 times stronger than DEET. So, give it a try one summer season. And, if it doesn't actually help keep the mosquitoes away, you've got plenty of catnip to tease your kitty with all summer long.
