Do you have a unique or funny name for the soil where you live? In some parts of Texas, the soil is known as black gumbo or also gumbo dirt. When the rains come, the dirt which contains clay swells up. Later, during a drought, cracks begin as the soil shrinks. While not big enough to lose a horse or a car, they can be quite wide and even a few feet deep. This eventually leads to cracks in the foundation of houses as the soil changes so extremely with the season.
In New Zealand, the Maori people name their soils according to how it fairs for their kumara or sweet potato gardens. Oneharuru is a sandy loam whileonetea is white, volcanic soil. It may seem strange, but both sweet potatoes and morning glories belong to the same genus, ipomoea. Both have similar flowers.
