One definition of desert is a "wavy sand sea." Described that way, you can almost see the beauty. If you live in a dry climate or want to conserve water, you really can have a pleasant garden. It might not be lush in the traditional sense, but it can be overflowing in another. Hen and chicks are a wonderful little succulent that you can enjoy for years.
Throughout the year, the mother plant or "hen" puts out tiny new succulents "the chicks." Not only is it adorable, you get many new plants each year! They are really nice in rock gardens. The contrast between the texture of rocks and the juicy succulent leaves is quite nice. Another plant that doesn't like too much water is pink stonecrop. Find it in our plant nursery.
